301: Only 1% of people have the courage to do this

On a recent phone call, I discussed with a mentor of mine how 99% of people haven’t formed their own view of the world. They haven’t done the work to acquire and form their own view of things, they’re just followers that are very easily influenced by the people and things around them.

Forming your own views is hard work. You have to think about where you’re right, where you may be wrong, be honest with yourself, and accept some hard truths. It’s easy to believe what you want to believe, it’s hard to believe what may conflict with the way you live or your prior beliefs. But you need to push yourself to be an intellectually savvy person.

I have some beliefs that I’ve thought through that go against what a lot of people think. For one, I think the world is too obsessed with money. Everybody thinks that money is the ultimate scoreboard, and we’re raised to go to college and collect as much money as we can in our 20s and 30s. I don’t think that’s the meaning of life, and that how you spend your days is a lot more important.

If I’m a billionaire and spend 12 hours a day in front of my computer screen, what does that really mean? Life is a culmination of how you spend your days; a lot of people spend their entire life trying to build wealth, and their life is over before they know it.

Politically, some people believe that it’s the government’s job to look after us and that suffering should be avoided and removed. I think that suffering is a very normal part of life for everybody and that it’s nobody’s responsibility to make my life easy except mine. Life without suffering it’s desirable, it’s that suffering, those challenges, and those setbacks that make life rewarding at the end of the day.

Do the work to form your own opinions. It takes work, that’s the key. There’s no one way to think about something and look at the world, and you should train yourself to really consider all sides of things.

About Me

I started the Sweaty Startup in December of 2018 because I believe the Shark Tank and Tech Crunch culture is ruining the real spirit of low-risk entrepreneurship.
