311: Three important habits that will change your life and your business

There are people in your life who like to complain, talk badly about other people, and criticize those around them. In fact, those are easy and natural habits to develop. But you can improve your life in so many ways by avoiding these negative habits and attitudes.

I’m reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, and the book’s first principle is to never criticize, condemn, or complain. I decided to try to go a full week of my life without any form of complaining, and it was shockingly difficult. This meant no complaining to my wife that I’m not feeling great, no acting grumpy, not blaming others for the situation that I’m in, and not criticizing those around me. After just a week of this behavior, I was a lot happier and even more pleasant to be around.

It’s in our nature to complain and criticize, but this is a cancerous mindset that leads you down a trail of unhappiness. This negative attitude of blaming and criticism creates a horrible environment both at home and in the office. Nobody cares about your problems, and 99% of the time you can solve any tough situation that you find yourself in. My partner and I used to blame the economy for not being able to find employees, but we fixed that by taking on a stance of extreme ownership. We realized that other companies were hiring despite the economy, so we can too.

I encourage you to give it a shot. Stop complaining, stop blaming people for the situation that you’re in, and stop criticizing others. Do it for a week and you’ll be more fun to be around, to work with, and to live with, and you’ll even be happier on top of it all.

About Me

I started the Sweaty Startup in December of 2018 because I believe the Shark Tank and Tech Crunch culture is ruining the real spirit of low-risk entrepreneurship.
