In 2021, I went from having never heard of Shepherd to becoming a customer and then an investor, and it completely changed my life. I had heard so many stories of business owners outsourcing work to countries like the Philippines, saving money on wages, but didn’t have full faith that it would work for me and my business. When I expressed interest in Shepherd, I gave them my role details and they lined up 20-minute interviews with three candidates back to back for me. I was so blown away and impressed that I hired all three of them. Of those three hires, one of them is now the head of customer service at Bolt Storage and manages a team of twelve. Of our 45 total employees, 35 have been hired from Shepherd.
Some people may have a negative view of outsourcing, but it’s truly life-changing for both the employer and the employee. In a touching moment, one employee in the Philippines confided in me that before he got the job with us he had been commuting for half an hour on a cramped bus to work a labor job for half the wage; he lives with his sister and disabled mom, and before he got the job his sister had been a sex worker to make ends meet. The hard truth is that people in America are entitled to nothing, and we’ve been able to find great staff abroad. We’re able to deliver more money to our investors, and we’re providing our workers with more humane conditions than their alternatives.
