365: How I’m Building My Holding Company

This is a snippet of an episode of The Fort podcast where I joined my friend and mentor Chris Powers as we discussed life, parenting, managing wealth, and where we are on our entrepreneurial journey.

I spent 2023 building a holding company for all sorts of new services for small businesses. I’ve created a corporate environment that can spin things up in just a few weeks. This isn’t your typical venture firm that would require financial wizards on the back end and a CFO and CRO for every business. Instead, I’m funding $50K in equity as an angel investor in my own startups. I get an idea, build the foundation for it, deposit $50K, buy a domain, and spin up the website. I’ve been at it for under a year, and it’s chaos, and it’s fun. The team is stressed and I’m working more than I’d like to, but I feel alive working in the trenches and seeing growth come together.

BoldSEO is one of my new initiatives. My brother was our first client as we tinkered and experimented with how to grow a business through strong SEO practices. After a few months his business exploded, moved to the top of Google searches, and he’s getting so many leads that he can barely keep up. I tweeted about his success and within 24 hours BoldSEO had 140 leads and 80 calls booked. I now have a company that is getting $80K in monthly recurring revenue.

Every business has either a customer issue or an employee/process issue as its bottleneck. I have a competitive advantage as Nick Huber to solve the customer issue. I’m able to flip on a customer faucet instantly through my brand reach, I use other services to spin things up, and I can hire affordable talent overseas through Support Shepherd. I’ve been able to make a real business almost overnight.

I honestly believe that five of my companies will be $50M businesses in the next ten years. When a company is three months old and gets 100 leads in a day, you know how powerful that can be. My goal in five years is for each of these businesses to mature to $5M+ in revenue and $1M+ in EBITDA. This is all part of my flywheel; as I gain more followers and more reach, I’ll be able to generate more customers for my businesses, which leads to more success, which generates more reach. And I can build an insanely talented management team around me this whole time.

About Me

I started the Sweaty Startup in December of 2018 because I believe the Shark Tank and Tech Crunch culture is ruining the real spirit of low-risk entrepreneurship.
